Matsusaka Wagyu stamped all over them The good bits were often worth reading, but too much is too much 4 5 StarsI really enjoyed reading Rise of Empire, I definitely enjoyed itthen Theft of Swords This book certainly picked up the pace from book one, seriously interesting things actually happened in this book The plot was fast paced and stimulating I believe there was a fair bit of badassery going on I didn t even notice the weird emotionless POV much this time, like yeah it was obviously still there, but it sbearable because I ve finally warmed up to the characters This still 4 5 StarsI yet, like I feel I m missing something ARE WE READING THE SAME BOOK Once again this book is two novels in one This time around we get Nyphron Rising and The Emerald Storm All stories are a continuation of each other with a connected plot, so it flows really well Michael J Sullivan is a fantastic writer, his books are easy to read, his a great vivid world builder and its definitely a humorous and fun read I found the pacing better in this instalment then Theft of Swords, the overall storyline was once again unoriginal but good In my opinion this book was a littlemy cup tea Theft of Swords was very classic fantasy, it didn t have much violence Whereas this book Rise of Empire was a littledark, we got to read about the darker side to Royce, Hadrian and Arista I really enjoyed the overall vibe in this book, we witnessed a few brutal barbaric acts like floggings and the fight scenes which might I add were next level to what I saw in book one, they were fantastic, a certain fight scene was so amazing, I was on the edge of seat while reading it, while having heart palpitations, so yeah that was pretty fun This book was alsocomplex then the first, it had a few major twists, aswell as castle intrigue, court politics, love and relationship secrets, sounds of amazement finally getting some good stuff out of Michael J Sullivan s novels Its definitely safe to say I m a fan of The Riyria and wantI can t wait to finish the series Seriously I love Arista so much I just low key wish I was her so I could turn people into frogs.I didn t like Nyphron Rising as much as The Emerald Storm, only because it wasn t as action packed, other then that it was a really good book I liked it a lot I love Arista so was happy to have a story with her POV, as one of the main POV s This story is set a year after the last book, and is basically about the beginning of a war Hadrian and Royce are now both retired but go on their last mission they re always saying, every mission is their last lol Arista sets off on a mission to save her brothers empire and takes Hadrian and Royce with her The story was thrilling and engaging enough, I just wantedaction Luckily The Emerald Storm delivered me a lot of violence so I m now a happy camper. My favorite out of the two stories was definitely The Emerald Storm, it was so EPIC This book is what I was waiting for, seriously thank you Michael J Sullivan for finally showing me your potential as an author, this book definitely exceeded my expectations and I loved it Seriously, it was so bloody good It was your typical action packed Pirate story, we follow Royce and Hadrian as they go on a journey to find an object Of course the journey doesn t go to plan and they find themselves in a deadly location The rumours are definitely true folks, this series gets better with each book The twists and reveals at the end were mind blowing and IT ACTUALLY HAD AWESOME FIGHT SCENES This was an action packed, fun, exhilarating book that I absolutely loved reading and I just need to fangirl over Hadrian, Royce Arista Seriously they are all awesome I really missed Myron this story but found Hadrian s POV to be my relief this time around I really love Hadrian now, he is so amazing, clumsy, funny, dopey and he is very badass and handsome Definitely swoon worthy, when he withdrew his Spadone sword shit got hectic and a lot of people died yayayayaya But I can t chose if I like himthen Royce or not Royce definitely had a few standout badass moments in these books and I have a new level of respect for himOh, sir, you have no idea what Royce is like I ll grant you that his association with Hadrian Blackwater has tempered him greatly Twelve years with that idealistic dreamer have made him practically human, but I know him I know what lurks beneath I ve seen things that make even my hardened heart shudder Get his anger up, and you ll unleash a demon that no one can control Believe me, he s like that and so muchNothing is beyond himI recommend this book to all fantasy lovers Although I must say if you are looking for a blood bath or a high violence fantasy, then keep on looking this is ahumorous soft fantasy, with classic themes Definitely a fun filled read that I m sure most fantasy fans would love Nyphron Rising 3.5 5 The Emerald Storm 4.5 5 Total Rating 4 5 A PUPPET IS CROWNED THE TRUE HEIR REMAINS HIDDEN A Do you like a broken hero who doesn t really want to be the hero Me Of course that is one of my favorite tropes the not so good, good guy MJS What about betrayals, double crosses, plots and pirates Me Thethe better I say as long as there is revenge in the long term for the good guys MJS And three dimensional Female characters that aren t just looking for someone to love them How do you feel about those Me Hmmm.well yes I do like them But there is some kissing right I mean I don t need a lot but I love to have something to ship and a smidgen of romance to go with all the betraying, double crossing and pirates MJS Okay, yes there are a few kisses in this But this is in no way a kissing book.Me Alright this seems like it might be something I like What about the villain, is he she any goodMJS I think you mean villain s plural and each is fantastic in their own way and each has his her own motivations.Me This is sounding better all the time Okay I must read this because I did love the Bromance between Royce and Hadrian in the first book This sounds even better..2 days later.Me Michael it was so much better I loved what you did there with Royce and Hadrian Sure this wasof a political book in the first half but I enjoyed the new dynamic of their team after Hadrian finds out about his secret destiny. Also you have some great bad guys It was hard for me to pick just one to hate since there are quite a few to pick from Everything from just a general thugs, to a religious fanatic bent on power, to a man out for revenge against the one he thinks wronged him years ago Well done on that front I m going to say that I was partial to Merrick though since he seems the most dangerous of the lotYou think you re a very clever fellow, don t you Saldur challenged No, Your Grace, Merrick replied Clever is the man who makes a fortune selling dried up cows, explaining how it saves the farmers the trouble of getting up every morning to milk them I m not clever I m a geniusThat you are Mr Merrick.I knew he was clever and playing a dangerous game and he still fooled me all the way.You didn t go light on Thrace though did you MJS You didn t think she d be safe after the events of the last book did you Me Well, no not exactly But I definitely didn t think it would start to go that bad for her either I do love all the stuff you did to and with her character though Just when I though I knew what was going on in her head.you proved that I didn t know anything MJS Did you find the ship you were looking for Me YES And then you know what happened But there was just enough kissing in this to keep that girly part of my head and heart happy. But do you want to know one of my favorite parts was MJS Of Course.was it when the two men boiled from the inside out Me Oh you do know me well and I very much enjoyed when they got what was coming to them but no it was much later I totally loved the arena type battle that Hadrian, Royce and a few others went through It reminded me of my time playing World Of Warcraft PvP player vs player arena battles So great MJS I see you have a bloodthirsty side to go with the girly parts of you Me I enjoyed this so much.there was action, intrigue, kissing, battles and a plethora of great dialogue Plus it seems that Merrick knows a Royce that was much different than the man he is today I wonder what he is going to do to Merrick when they finally meet up again.I think it might get a little bloody MJS No spoilers from me Me Fine I must go I have to read the next book because this one was so bloody good You pleasantly surprised me with the complexity of your story Mr Sullivan Thanks for the talk What do we do What we always do, Royce replied, only better This is an omnibus edition which means that it contains two books, Nyphron income Riyria, just to remind you consists of Royce Melborn who regards the law merely as suggestion and violence as means to all ends, and Hadrian Blackwater who breathes principles and dines on honour The previous instalment focused on bromance between the two This time, their friendship and, indeed, partnership will be tested by doubts and strife This makes the dynamic between theminteresting, allows for character development andnuanced character building Although it does not mean that there will be no banter or action scenes so those of you who liked the duo will not be disappointed As the story progresses, andprotagonists appear and are given voice Among them, the most prominent are the members of the Melengar royal family, Alric and Arista, the ancient wizard Ezrahaddon and Thrace, upon whom the fortune smiled in a particularly ironic way together with her new companion, Amilia Those of the readers who were not so impressed with Royce and Hadrian will perhaps be relived to hear that the other characters are given much wider margin to this extent that at times one might get the feeling that Royce and Hadrian are secondary to the main plot We learnregarding the Riyria background and their personal stories, but also how their lives fit into other story arcs and the grand tale of Novron s heir We get to know other political forces and get to visit other places on the vast map of this world You will get battles, and duels, scheming and backstabbing, escapes and rescues although admittedly some scenes will be familiar There is also a sea gig yay or nay for me a nay, the only maritime story I adored was The Fox, and only because it was not defined by this setting While I enjoyed the book, I could not get over the feeling that the whole tale is told with a hefty dose of naivety that is not entirely thought through On the one hand, you will have brutality and cruelty, on the other events will play out according to logic that is almost childish Consequently, while it is a book that I d hand to a middle grader without any qualms and with words of encouragement, I had to suspend my sarcastic reasoningthan once If you are a super down to earth reader, some things might be irritating for you The scenes with Amilia, the simple girl who uses words like inconveniencing and indisposed , Hadrian taking over command in a military camp there was not a single sentence I underlined because I liked the sound of it No profound reflections, no wise observations, no poetry The writing style is succinct, at times funny in a sitcom like way but it will not prove you with great quotes or one liners The Riryia Revelations are revelational if you are looking for a smart and funny comfort read Not too overwhelming or ambitious, not too heavy extent that at times one might get the feeling that Royce and Hadrian are secondary to the main plot Among those crown idiot princess Arista takes the precedence In book three she nearly dominates the whole book and her POV isfrequent and longer than those of Royce and Hadrian combined. The one and only reason why the books, yes both of them, are of the one star quality, is the unbearable stupidity of princess Arista and her antics Mind you, she was getting on my nerves before, but it has been nothing when compared with the tomfooleries that await here 1 A princess of the crown after throwing tantrum at the prospect of a strategic marriage goes traipsing around as an ambassador in a dirty carriage and a crumpled dress.2 A princess of the crown who throws yet another tantrum when it is pointed out that her ambassadorial missions were futile.3 A princess of the crown where her family is barely holing the throne who undermines the fragile authority of her brother without a thought Or two Scratch that, that s one thought too many 4 A girl who in spite of points one, two and three believes herself to be no fool Probably this is why she devises a plan that requires posing as a scullery maid 5 A princess of the crown who takes her own responsibilities so seriously that she leaves the realm without telling anyone and travels with two men of questionable provenance Unescorted, why not 6 An appointed official taking her responsibilities so seriously that she saunters off when convenient without bothering to notify anyone Oh, no, scratch that, she did leave a letter 7 A female protagonist constantly comparing herself to other femaleswho are too stupid in her opinion to be interested in anything else beyond their looks, never had ridden a horse, etc Also, a noble who supposedly has had three maids who dressed and undressed her daily until it was time to impress foreign officials during a diplomatic mission In that case, check point 1 8 A girl who is quite happy to There is one honest paragraph about her in book 3, chapter 7 Unfortunately, it was a very brief paragraph and nothing came out of it In both instalments Arista isa hindrance and embarrassment than help The very same mistakes and idiocies repeat chapter in, chapter out and rare moments of lucidity and reflection do not result in a change of action The only thing that happens is that she evolves into a snowflake with special abilities OK, I get it the book is written in a certain convention Heroes do heroics, while villains die in a villainous way Everybody behaves themselves accordingly, just as you expect people to behave themselves in a certain way during grandmother s tea party It requires specific cliches, stereotypes, and paradoxes in what is usually called a suspension of disbelief But Arista s idiocy takes this suspension business to a whole new level The only saving grace is the fact that she is so stupid that indeed, it is impossible to predict what would she not do It is such a shame that such an awful character managed to spoiler the whole book Without Arista, or with her kept firmly on the margins of the Riyria adventures, it would have been an altogether pleasant read I still cannot decide whether the Author knows that Arista is an idiot and winks at me or whether he expects me to take her seriously I d love to continue the series hoping for her brutal and untimely death, but I fear that the worst is yet to come hide spoiler My general rating is a compromise between these two Other Riyria Revelations Theft of Swords The Crown of Conspiracy hence two different plots albeit they continue the same story line and the general underlying picture and it is done with finesse so it feels a genuine continuation The strongest point of this book in my opinion are the characters, specifically Royce and Hadrian who are the view spoiler Riyria hide spoiler thieves They made a profession out of it and they are really good at it One isa ruthless and calculating mind, the other is the valiant and honorable warrior who just interact perfectly well together view spoiler In book 3, Hadrian actually has a very dark moment, he feels lost and he is not doing enough, he feels he is just a common thief taking advantage of situations the war and people to make profit That does not sit well with his conscious and this shows throughout the book The story hope Hadrian will become her partner Also, how cool is she, mastering the art of sorcery Sure, she might be a little too overpowered by creating her own magic but I will leave it as she is blessed and book is rich in violence not grim dark but there is assassination, killings, uprising, gore description of brutality, attempted rape so far from light topics but Michael J Sullivan delivery of the characters, the dialog and the descriptions just add a lighter tone to the telling which makes this book evenmagnetic than already is with the cool stuff happening to the main characters So, great work of fantasy, I would go as far as to say that anyone would love this series, it is one of those books which can be easily read and loved by every fantasy reader First book felt like a very long her entitled upbringing and maturing Especially in the second book Long story short, Alric sucks I ve come to respect Arista in the end of the second book She has become into a strong, complex and quite lovable female character I stumbled upon this picture on pinterest as a representation of her And I think it fits, especially with the darker feeling of the second book It was grimmer than all nd your choice will affect manyYou may wonder why you should read Riyria while there are so many fantasy books out there, each of them narrating a different version of the constant battle between Good and Evil The answer is simple Mr.Sullivan s world of fantasy is unique, beautiful, breathtaking and absolutely, undoubtedly EPIC.Why Mr.Sullivan is excellent at manipulation You don t know who is going to betray whom, who is an ally and who is a foe, and when you think you get a clear picture, your beliefs are turned upside down During Rise of Empire, I was deceived, cheated and in the end, I stood wide eyed and my mouth hung open because I could not come to terms with what I just read As contradictory as it may sounds, surprises isn t the only weapon in Mr.Sullivan s arsenal He left enough hints for the reader to sense an impending doom, a catastrophe that will change Hadrian and Royce s lives forever, but you can do nothing to stop it, just wait helpless and see And that s evenpainful than the plot twists Royce and Hadrian They are an unpredictable pair, some of the greatest heroes that I have ever encountered Hadrian is noble, tired of serving the highest bidder, he searches a greater purpose in his life Royce on the other hand, is practical and doesn t care about morality or justice But as his walls crumble, as we get a better perspective of the way he grew up, the lack of family and a place where he belongs, my heart breaks for him Both Hadrian and Royce are painted so vividly that I can t help but feel that I have known them my entire life The female characters I love their courage and strength and resourcefulness Arista has turned from a spoiled princess into a fighter, a witch and a politician, a woman who takes her fate in her own hands and proves that she is no longer a damsel in distress Thrace and Amilia are also great, but the biggest surprise for me is Gwen Who thought that a prostitute would be a gentle, wise and caring woman, whose affection and kindness would soften the toughest thief Merrick I hate him with a loathing passion, but he is cunning and a genious villain The way he played Riyria is both frustrating and fascinating And of course there are the epic battles, the interesting secondary characters, the spells, the warnings and a whole new world full of adventures and dangers And goblins.Need I say It s safe to say now that with each installment, each book in the series certainly gets better in its quality consistently The 2nd omnibus in Riyria Revelations titled Rise of Empire consists of book 3, The Emerald Storm.Nyphron RisingFanart of Royce Hadrian scaling view spoiler the Tower of Drumindor hide spoiler The plot lines from the two books in Rise of Empire are muchengrossing than before Whether it s from book 3 or book 4, the series keeps building upon the event that happened in the previous book carefully It still doesn t reach the epic fantasy scope at this point butintriguing events and themes such as civil war, pirates, politics, loyalty, friendship and love can be found here The plot itself this time are connected with our main character s, Royce and Hadrian s background which in previous installments are clearly withhold and made their characteristic flat as a board, not this time After finding outabout their history, it sinteresting to see how the story will develop from their POV and even though the plot in each book are still predictable to me, I really can t predict how the overarching and main plot of the series will conclude, especially who the Heir of Novron is There s so much foundation being lay upon from these 4 books and I hope Michael managed to conclude it brick by brick on the conclusion.World building are expandedand Michael s writing is still very easy to read There are some parts on the world building aspect that bothers me though, in my opinion there s way too many unnecessary names to remembered, whether it s from place, lore and characters Now, this is usually a good thing since it means the world, history and lore are richer in content but there are too many characters which were introduced only in each book and never to be seen again It kills the motivation to remember most of them since you ll probably know that some of the minor characters introduced probably won t make an appearance again after what happened in the respective installment I could care less about what happened to them since the amount of buildup done towards them are really scarce.Although the writing are still easy to read, but seeing Michael wrote all 6 book before publishing any of them, I find there s no improvement at all on its writing This is my personal opinion, it s probably one of the two factors that will never work with me throughout this series and I have to look past it to enjoy these books , the narrative I mentioned before that I simply can t care about Royce Hadrian since I find the narrative robbed them of their motivation and feelings, this still remained true I m used to it already but it s just a shame I can t get attached to the characters since we never get to be inside their heads, I even find 1st person POV which usually doesn t sit well with me to be better in comparison.Even though I can t attach myself to the characters in this series, it doesn t mean that they re not a great character In fact, Hadrian the other main s character POV are so interesting and addictive to read, especially the girls in this series, Arista, Modina and Amilia It s stunning how much development were put into the girls story line, I find them to be a superior written characters compared to Royce, especially Arista Her POV and character development from book 1 are simply amazing, that s all I ll say on this subject It s really better for you to see their developments for yourself but if you re looking for a high fantasy series with a great and strong female characters, rest assured you can find them here Michael proved to us that it s possible to write strong female characters without them having any weapons at their disposal.Yes, you heard that right, the main problem with Royce for me from before still remained and at this point, I just have to put it in my mindset that Royce was a badass in the past but he s just smart and fast in the present If I m proven wrong in the last books then I ll be happy but as of now, there are way too many times the characters in the book mentioned something like Royce is a legend, he can kill everyone and all that and I get it already, he s an amazing assassin in the pastwhich we didn t get to see in actions , now please let me see he live his legends in the present please And by actions what I meant is not only one or two time occurrence like in these two books which happened only in a few pages Luckily this case doesn t hold true for Hadrian, my new favorite out of the two For a kind hearted to a fault character, Hadrian proved himself to be a beast when needed to be and holds true to his legend We get to see him in actions a LOT this time and I m really pleased to read all his POV chapters, starting from his background, all his action scenes, his friendship with Royce and loyalty to his friends and principle.Hadrian with his Spadone. There s another really huge problem I definitely can t overlook which doesn t affect my rating of this book since it still remained to be seen in the conclusion of the series, I m really hoping with all my heart I would be proven wrong One of the character in the book, I won t tell you who, explicitly foreshadowed the character itself that he she will die This is a seriously stupid decision if it ended up happening, the character and narrative basically spoiled the plot twist and killed the surprising factor itself For those of you who have read the book or series, I m talking about view spoiler Gwen hide spoiler This is still inconclusive but I have a feeling from the stories predictability until now that it will end up happening.Although some problems from previous omnibus still persist here, overall, I find Rise of Empire to be a much better andengrossing experience if you can look beyond some of its flaws I can ALMOST safely recommend this series to anyone who s looking for a lighter high fantasy series to read, I have to read the conclusion of the series first before truly recommending it to anyone However, I can confirm that everyone s statement about the series being better with its next sequel is true I gave the first book, Crown Conspiracy a mere 2 stars, it s basically one of the lowest book I ever rated, look how I rated this omnibus and see for yourself how the series grow consistently and I hope the end will prove to be as satisfying as everyone keep on telling me Nyphron Rising 4 5 StarsThe Emerald Storm 4 5 StarsRise of Empire 8 10 Stars
